What can be done about feral chicken flocks? | News, Sports, Jobs

Can something please be done about the ever-increasing feral chicken flocks in Central Maui?

It started at my house a few months ago with one lame rooster. Now, there’s dozens of chickens and several more roosters. Plus they are on their third or fourth batch of chicks, which will result in dozens more. I see them in all the yards around here (the old section of Maui Lani) and sometimes in my backyard. I’ve heard from other friends in Kahului and Wailuku with the same complaint.

Not only is the noise extremely annoying with the roosters screeching and the hens loudly clucking all the time (day and night), but it’s probably also a significant health hazard because of all the droppings. I didn’t move here to live in a barnyard.

The Maui Humane Society offers cages to catch them and they will euthanize them. After quite a few attempts, I’ve been unsuccessful in catching any in the cage. I guess that’s OK because I’d feel bad if I took one in and knew it would be killed. But, I sure would like them gone! All chicken catchers welcome!

What can be done — and soon?
